Nepal Music Archive (NMA) is Nepal's first dedicated digital music archive, an institution built on the belief that a nation's songs are as much a part of its identity as its monuments and manuscripts. Founded to preserve, document, and provide access to Nepal's musical heritage, NMA brings together recordings, album covers, research publications, record label histories, and decades of music journalism under one roof. Their work is driven by a quiet urgency: that the sounds of a culture, if left unattended, can disappear faster than stone.

Challenge

NMA had been doing the painstaking work of archiving for years, collecting recordings, cataloging publications, digitizing rare materials, but none of it was accessible to the people it was meant for. There was no website, no portal, no way for a researcher in Kathmandu or a music historian halfway across the world to reach what the archive held. The collections existed, but they existed in isolation. Without a public-facing platform, NMA's mission of preservation was only half complete: the materials were saved, but they were not shared.

Approach

We began by understanding what kind of institution NMA truly is, not a music streaming service, but a living library. That distinction shaped every decision we made. The platform needed to feel serious and trustworthy, accessible to academics and students alike, while still carrying the warmth of something built out of genuine cultural love. We worked closely with the NMA team and aligned the visual language with the archive's identity. The result is a platform designed for discovery, one that invites you to explore and stay.

A Door Into the Archive

The first challenge was helping visitors understand what NMA is the moment they arrive. Archives can feel cold or intimidating, so we designed the homepage to lead with the scope and richness of what's inside, surfacing collections, album covers, and publication counts as an invitation rather than a catalogue index. The visual hierarchy gently orients the visitor: here is what exists, here is how to find it, here is why it matters.

Finding What You're Looking For

With over 8,000 collections and thousands of individual items, search wasn't a feature, it was the foundation. We built a bilingual search experience that works in both English and Nepali, ensuring the platform serves local researchers as naturally as it serves the international academic community. Metadata is structured so that browsing by artist, record label, publication type, or era all feel intuitive. A collection this large only becomes useful when the person looking for something can actually find it.

Belonging to Something Larger

An archive lives or dies by the community that contributes to and cares for it. We designed several pathways for people to become part of NMA's story, through account creation, saved collections, newsletter subscriptions, volunteer sign-ups, and visit scheduling. These are how an archive builds its community. A researcher who can save a collection, a volunteer who can schedule their first shift, a music enthusiast who receives updates: each of these touchpoints turns a visitor into a stakeholder.

Honoring the Source

Nepal's musical history spans folk traditions, pop, classical forms, and decades of recorded sound from labels like Music Nepal. We gave visual breathing room to album covers and archival imagery, treating them as the cultural artifacts they are rather than database thumbnails. The design choices throughout reflect a respect for the materials and for the people who created them.
